Our Mission
UA Community Service Committee endeavors to promote undergraduates’ involvement in public service throughout their MIT careers by addressing the following three obstacles:
Investigating the challenges students face when pursuing their interests in service on and off campus (transportation, funding, etc).
Bringing together students, organizations, and offices on campus in an effort to create a more cohesive service ecosystem at MIT.
Improving accessibility, visibility, and support for service with local organizations.
Current projects
This initiative, in partnership with the Community Charter School of Cambridge, aims to increase the personal motivation and academic self-confidence of underperforming middle school students. Rather than serving as an MIT feeder program, IGNITE helps average students recognize their value and potential through innovative programming and kin-like companionship.
BrainTrust and Pre-Medical society, with the backing of UA CommServe, have partnered up to offer a nursing home and hospice volunteering program to anyone interested at MIT. By making bi-monthly trips to RegalCare (a nursing home in Medford, MA), nursing home volunteers will bond with residents who don’t have family members that visit them. Hospice volunteers, on the other hand, will visit the same person bi-monthly (or more) as they reach the end of their life. Those interested in being hospice volunteers will need to undergo more extensive background checks, training, and commit to 6-months of volunteering. Both programs will have their Ubers covered! If interested in either program, reach out to mps-exec@mit.edu and braintrust-exec@mit.edu!
