Community Competition
Is your community up for the challenge?
This competition is structured around student communities (e.g. clubs, dorm halls, learning communities, departments, friend groups, etc.). Communities will earn more points through their investment in MIT COVID Hack, earning points by team registrations, number of ideas submitted, attendance at Hack events, participation and success at Game Night during HackHype Week, and more to be detailed below. Let the games begin!
Rules of entry
Each student group can register their student community to enter into the competition at tinyurl.com/hack-community-competition. Each registered community must assign a Community Captain and further details will be communicated to the Community Captain, including how to register teams and how to report progress towards prizes.
Points
Student communities will receive points for signing up teams, participating in (and winning!) Game Night events, attending the MIT COVID Hack opening/closing ceremony, and submitting Hack proposals; the point breakdowns are below.
Each team registered under a student community earns 10 points for their community.
Each team that participates** in Game Night during HackHype Week on January 5 earns 10 points for their community.
Every game won earns an additional 10 points
Attending** the Opening and Closing Ceremonies can earn communities up to 50 points for each ceremony.
Student groups will earn 50*f points from the opening and closing ceremonies, where f is the fraction of teams from that group who attend those events. (For example, if half of the community’s teams attend the Opening ceremony, they get 50*0.5 = 25 points. Then, if all of that community’s teams attend the Closing ceremony, they get 50*1 = 50 points, for 75 extra points total from both the Opening and Closing Ceremony).
Each team that submits a proposal during the Hack earns 25 points for their community.
**A team is considered to have participated or attended an event if at least half of its membership is in attendance (if there is 1 representative for a 2-person team or 2 representatives for a 3-person team)
Prizes
There are four prize categories: three top prizes, and a prize for all teams who earn a minimum of 100 points.
1st Place. Custom Community Merch, mini-fridges, TVs, or Gift of your Choice (up to $750)
2nd Place. Custom Community Merch, Gaming Console, or Gift of your Choice (up to $500)
3rd Place. Custom Community Merch, Community Purchases (beanbags chairs, books, etc) or Gift of your Choice (up to $250)
For all communities that earn 100 points! Each member of the group who participated in the Hack gets a prize. Communities can choose between a $5 Amazon book reimbursement or a custom community sticker/keychain for each participating member.
Logistics
Each student group will assign one person to be the Community Captain, who will be in charge of keeping track of the participation of the group’s teams. This person will receive further details once the community is registered. They will fill out a form registering their group’s teams (so if you are the group lead, make sure to get people in your community to sign up!)
Game Night
Here are the Game Night events:
The games will be Spill the Tea, Codenames, Jeopardy!, and one of Monopoly, Among Us, and Chess (tbd)
In Spill the Tea, teams will do a brain dump of problems and potential solutions to problems. All types of ideas are encouraged.
