DIVERSITY COUNCIL

The UA Diversity Council (UADC) is a representative body tasked with collaborating on common interests and advocating for shared solutions regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion at MIT. UADC works closely with the Institute Community & Equity Office to elevate the DEI needs of undergraduate students through policy, statements, and recommendations.

Fall 2020 was the inaugural semester of UADC’s operation. To better establish this new entity, the leadership placed a focus on setting a strong foundation for growth. To this end, we authored recruitment initiatives to attract a targeted, diverse set of perspectives for regular attendees and developed a comprehensive onboarding form. UADC also meets on a weekly basis to establish community and used the meeting time to consult with key MIT staff DEI stakeholders; including leadership from the Institute Community and Equity Officer (ICEO), regarding the pending MIT Strategic Action Plan, and the Division for Student Life (DSL), regarding the inaugural MIT Reboot program. When UADC did not met with invited guests, we focused on how we can better support and/or author DEI initiatives that lie under our purview of creation and accountability, such as problems in undergraduate student groups and key partners to making a difference (i.e. ‘recruitment and retention’ and ‘ASA’). Next semester, UADC will focus on increasing membership to enhance this undergraduate coalition, supporting Institute DEI initiatives through feedback and engagement, and centralizing DEI departmental information with the goal to enhance ideas and foster constructive feedback in their long term planning.

The UADC is led by the UA Committee on Community and Diversity
